# Sales performance: a useful rhythm for KPIs and pipeline reviews

A sales dashboard is useful when the team can act on it. Sales performance management connects a shared definition of progress with regular conversations about opportunities, decisions and coaching. Start with a small set of measures that support the work your team needs to do.

## Agree what each indicator means

Define each measure, its source, its owner and the decision it supports. For example, explain which opportunities count in the pipeline, what qualifies a stage change and how a forecast category is assigned. Without shared definitions, two people can report the same metric while describing different situations.

## Review evidence behind opportunities

A pipeline review should examine the customer’s decision, rather than just request a new close date. Ask what has changed, which action the customer has taken, what remains uncertain and who owns the next step. Treat a missing decision-maker or an untested assumption as something to resolve, not a reason to increase a probability.

## Use coaching to improve execution

Choose specific behaviours to practise, such as discovery questions, qualification or negotiation preparation. Managers can review an upcoming meeting with a salesperson, observe where appropriate and discuss what happened afterwards. Keep the focus on a practical change that the salesperson can apply in their next customer interaction.

## Distinguish targets from results

A target expresses an intended improvement. A result requires a measured starting point, a consistent definition and an observation period. State whether an improvement is relative or measured in percentage points. Do not describe an illustrative scenario as an achieved client outcome.

## Keep the operating rhythm useful

Agree a recurring review with a clear purpose, suitable data and decisions to make. Record actions and follow them through before adding more measures. If a metric generates repeated discussion but no decision, revisit its definition or its usefulness. The goal is better commercial execution, rather than a more elaborate dashboard.

## Preparation checklist

- Which decision does each KPI support?
- Do stage changes rely on customer evidence?
- Are forecast assumptions explicit?
- What specific behaviour will the manager coach?
- Are targets clearly separated from measured results?
